Traveling Soccer Overview

Competitive (Traveling) Soccer Overview

MBSA offers youth players a more competitive soccer experience than that of Parks & Recreation soccer program.  Our teams are members of the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) and play league MYSA games against competitive (travel) teams from other soccer clubs.  MYSA has six geographic districts.  MBSA teams generally play in the North District, but may be placed in another district based on MYSA’s recommendations.  Depending on which district a team is placed (i.e., North or West), a team can play teams from the north and west suburbs and outlying areas (i.e., Blaine, Champlin, Brooklyn Park, Edina, Eden Prairie, Minneapolis, St. Cloud or Duluth).

MBSA follows MYSA’s guidelines regarding age and level of play.  A player may play up an age group (older age group); however, a player may not play down an age group (younger age group).  For instance, if a player’s date of birth places him/her as a 10 year old.  This player may play at U10 (10 year old) or up U11 (11 year old) level but can not play at U9 (9 year old) level.  The competitive age levels begin at age nine or U9 level; however, an eight year old may play up at the U9 level.  Eight years old and younger players may not register on a U11 or older team.  The competitive age level ends at age 19.

To determine the age level for your daughter or son, please visit MYSA for their birth year guidelines.

There are different competitive levels of play.  The highest level of play is the most competitive.  Below is a chart that summarizes the age grouping and competitive level of play.

Depending on the number of players of a particular age group, MBSA may have several teams at a certain competitive level.  If that is the case, the teams are numbered.  For example, MBSA may have the following teams at U9: U9 Girls Maroon, U9 Girls Gold #1, and U9 Girls Gold #2.  Thus the Maroon team is the highest level and the Gold #1 and Gold #2 team are at the second level.

The number of players that can be on a team is set by MYSA.  Below is a chart of the roster size for each age group.

Age Roster size Over roster
U9-10 8-12 1
U11-12 10-14 1
U13-15 11-18 2
U16-19 11-22 2

Game duration is set by MYSA as follows.  Tournaments may alter game length at the tournament committee's discretion.  If that is done, Tournament Rules will state the game length.

U11-U12 Two 30 minute halves
